01The challenge
The owners love the old French villas in Hai Phong's historic quarter. They wanted a home with that classic character, but with the comfort of a new house and nothing heavy or overly ornate.
02Design concept
We kept the finest features of the old French houses: steep roofs, tall windows and a wide veranda lined with white columns. The ornamentation was pared back, with moldings kept only where an accent was needed.
A three-meter-wide veranda running around the first floor is where the family drinks tea and enjoys the garden.

03Living spaces
The first floor has the entrance hall, a large living room, the dining room and a library. The second floor has five bedrooms. The attic holds an entertainment room and the owner's study.

04Materials & details
- Lightweight cast GRC columns and moldings, durable outdoors
- White-painted ironwood doors with classic wrought-iron details
- Herringbone wood floors in the living room and library
- Stone-gray terracotta roof tiles
The house has the soul of the old quarter, yet it's as comfortable to live in as a modern home. Exactly as I imagined.
Results
The project was completed in 14 months. The white veranda has become a familiar sight in the neighborhood, and many people stop to take photos.
