01The challenge
The owners live in Ho Chi Minh City and wanted a house where the whole extended family could gather for the holidays. It had to stay warm at night, be easy to lock up while they were away, and not cost a single pine tree on the land.
02Design concept
We took the familiar pitched roof of Da Lat and extended it low to the ground to hold in the warmth. Large glass walls face the morning sun, while the rest of the house is built with thick wooden walls.
The house is tucked in between the existing pine trees, so every window looks out onto greenery.

03Living spaces
The first floor holds a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen and a large dining room. The second floor has five bedrooms. The attic is a shared bunk room for the kids, with a skylight for stargazing.

04Materials & details
- Thermally treated pine cladding on the exterior walls
- Blue-gray slate roof tiles
- A wood-burning fireplace with a heat duct up to the second floor
- Oak flooring with underfloor heating in the bathrooms
Every evening the whole family sits around the fireplace. The kids love the attic with its window to the sky most of all.
Results
Not a single pine tree was cut during construction. The house holds heat well, and in the evening one fireplace is enough for both floors.
