01The challenge
A three-generation family of seven. The grandparents wanted a garden to grow vegetables, the parents needed space to work, and the kids needed room to play. All on a plot that isn't very large.
02Design concept
We stacked the house in three stepped-back floors. Each floor sets back to leave a terrace on the roof of the floor below: a vegetable garden for the grandparents, a play area for the kids and a rooftop terrace for relaxing.
The wooden volume on the top floor sits like a box floating on a glass base, shading the floors below.

03Living spaces
The first floor belongs to the grandparents, with a bedroom, living room and a door out to the vegetable garden. The second floor has the kitchen, dining room and family room. The third floor has the bedrooms for the parents and children.

04Materials & details
- Green roofs with their own waterproofing and drainage layers
- Outdoor composite wood cladding on the third-floor volume
- Automatic drip irrigation for all three gardens
- A home elevator for the grandparents
The grandparents grow vegetables on the first floor, the kids play on the second, and in the evening the whole family goes up to the rooftop to watch the sky.
Results
The three rooftop gardens make the house noticeably cooler. The family now grows most of the vegetables they eat every day.
