Overwater Bungalows

A cluster of 24 thatched bungalows built over the water and linked to the shore by wooden bridges: guests open the door and see the sea.

01The challenge

The investor owns a small bay with clear, calm water. They wanted a resort where guests stay right on the water, yet one that stays solid when the monsoon winds arrive.

02Design concept

Each unit stands on concrete piles, with the floor 1.2 m above the high-tide level. Tall, steep thatched roofs keep the rooms cool without running the air conditioning all day.

03Materials and construction

  • Salt-resistant concrete piles and termite-treated wood decking
  • Nipa palm thatch roofs renewed season by season
  • Wooden bridges with handrails and low step lights for the evening
Guests come back mostly because they get to sleep over the sea and still feel safe. Through this past windy season, the units stayed perfectly solid.

Results

The resort was fully booked in its very first summer, with room rates about 40% higher than the units on shore.
