Designing a home for a three-generation family

Grandparents need quiet, parents need a place to work, children need room to play. How can everyone feel comfortable under one roof?

Many Vietnamese families still live with their grandparents. A good home for three generations needs shared spaces where the whole family comes together, as well as private spaces for each person.

Grandparents' room on the ground floor

Grandparents are best placed on the ground floor, close to the garden exit and a bathroom. If the house has three or more stories, plan space for a home elevator from the start.

Shared spaces in the middle

The kitchen, dining room and family room should flow into one another, set in the middle of the house. This is where the family gathers every day.

Soundproofing between floors

Kids running around, parents in online meetings, grandparents taking an afternoon nap. Soundproof floors and well-sealed doors keep everyone from disturbing each other.

Leave room for change

Children grow up and needs change too. A multipurpose room can be a playroom today and a study or bedroom later on.
