Choosing wood for homes in humid climates

Wood makes a home warm and beautiful, but damp, humid seasons can make it warp, crack and grow mold. Choosing the right type avoids most of the trouble.

Wood is a favorite material for many homeowners. But with the damp, muggy season in the North and heavy rains in the South, the wrong wood will deteriorate quickly.

Indoor wood

Floors and stairs should use thoroughly kiln-dried wood with a moisture content below 12%. Oak, walnut and ash are popular, stable choices.

Outdoor wood

Outdoors, use heat-treated wood, teak or wood-plastic composite. These hold up well to rain and sun and are less prone to termites and wood borers.

Maintenance

Outdoor wood should get a protective oil coat once a year. Indoors, keep rooms well ventilated and run a dehumidifier during the humid season.
